Candlebox, from Seattle, Washington were originally named Uncle Duke; they later changed the name as a tribute to a Midnight Oil song. Candlebox were sometimes looked down upon by grunge fans for their style, which was considered by some to be a more derivative version of true grunge, and their commercial success as a result of it. Despite this, the band played the Seattle club circuit during the early 1990s to many of the same fans who had supported many of the bands that had come immediately before them. The members did not consider Candlebox to be a grunge band however; they viewed themselves as a rock and roll band more than anything and their style reflected that.

It'd be easy to recap the career of Hoobastank: a couple of guys meet in a Battle of the Bands in Agoura Hills, CA, in 1994. They grab a bassist and a drummer, damn themselves with a weird band name, build up a local following, get signed, put out two records that earn accolades like "post-grunge ear candy," release a monster ballad ("The Reason"), get nominated for three Grammys ... well, we can go on.

Flobots: When a pair of intelligent, visionary emcees joins forces with a battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, a classically trained violist, and a jazz trumpet player, the result is a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop. Progressive in both style and message, the band's ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned Flobots a reputation for both originality and authenticity. www.wbcn.com

Three nights! Eight Bands! $29 ticket for each night and parking is FREE! Or get the XMAS RAVE XPERIENCE PASS...$75 gets you in for all three nights!

TAB the band TAB the band formed in December 2006. What resulted was a ragged, hard rock band the likes of which has not been seen since 1974, but sounds like it could still be good in 2074.

Rocketing to the forefront of the music world in 1992, Scott Weiland has become one of the music world's most highly respected and prolific artists. As the front man for Stone Temple Pilots, Weiland has remained a dominant force in rock music since the group's inception. Now with his sophomore solo release Weiland proves that his music and song-writing is as potent and powerfu as ever.

Squirrel Nut Zippers, featuring original and founding members Katherine Whalen, Jimbo Mathis, Chris Phillips, Je Widenhouse and Stuart Cole. The band still rejoices at the difficulty people have pigeonholing their unmistakable sound. A perpetually evolving, hybrid-stew of Southern roots traditions, blues and jazz, the Zippers were aptly tagged "'30s punk" by one critic. They have always flirted with a muse most concerned with ghosts, love gone wrong, fever-dreams and stories unearthed from days past. Centered around the beguiling vocals of Katherine Whalen and the anachronistic windup toy that is Jimbo Mathus, the Zippers promise to both charm and confound. snzippers.com

The Brew

Saturday, December 27, 2008

  • Buy Tickets
  • Standing show limited seats available

The Brew are an aptly named quartet from Amesbury, a town in northeastern Massachusetts, cooking up a musical melting pot on their brand-new, self-released album, Back to the Woods, that combines their roots in classic rock, adding ingredients of prog, jazz, reggae, world beat, indie, funk and orchestral pop, sometimes in the course of a single song.

"I feel like we would be doing this no matter what, but to have so many people validate what we believe in so deeply, it makes it something really special," says Chris Plante, the keyboardist for the group, who joined high school classmates, guitarist Dave Drouin and drummer Kelly Kane, with his brother, bassist Joe Plante, to form The Brew.

The Brew has that indefinable "it" that is the distillation of talent, execution and unconditional commitment to the dream of living up to their abilities. That commitment explains why folks drive hundreds of miles to shows and female fans are sporting Brew tattoos. The band's commitment to their music is total, and in a flavor-of-the-month world of commercialism, they are a walk-the-talk example of succeeding on your own terms. http://www.thebrew.biz
